Historical sights of Třeboň and its surroundings

Třeboň dates back originally to the first half of the 12th century. Třeboň experienced its greatest boom in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially during the rule of the last two Rožmberks - Vilém and Petr Vok of Rožmberk. The most famous builders of this "golden age" were Štěpánek Netolický, Jakub Krčín of Jelčany and Sedlčany and Mikuláš Ruthard of Malešov.

In 1660 the Schwarzenbergs took possession of Třeboň, and it remained in their possession until the 20th century.

While staying in Třeboň, in the pearl of South Bohemia, don’t forget to visit:

Třeboň Chateau is one of the largest chateau complexes in the Czech Republic. It is surrounded by a magnificent park and ramparts. The main part of the Třeboň Chateau currently houses depositories of the State Regional Archive. Many pieces of the archival collection have been accredited as cultural relics.

The family vault of the Schwarzenbergs is one of the most architecturally remarkable monuments in southern Bohemia. It is situated in the park at the south-eastern side of the pond called Svět (World). It was built in the second half of the 19th century in neo-gothic style. In summer the chapel is used to hold concerts.

The Deanery Church of Our Lady Queen and St. Jiles and former Augustinian monastery are situated in the vicinity of the square. A remarkable feature of the church of Třeboň is its double nave, executed with a rare purity of design, which was the first to be built in the Czech lands. After its structure was completed, it was fitted out with furnishings of a high artistic value. The panels of the high altar are the work of  the “Master of the Třeboň Altar” and rank among the masterpieces of Czech gothic painting of the last quarter of the 14th century. Of the original furnishings from the beginning of the 14th century, the argillite statue of Madonna and Child is the only one still to be found in the church.

The Třeboň Brewery
Beer brewing in Třeboň has a long tradition dating back to the 14th century. In the brewery cellar you can sample the traditional light and dark lagers, as well as yeast beer. In summer the brewery terrace is open to the public. A sightseeing tour including a beer tasting may be ordered.
