Directly behind the walls of the town of Třeboň lies the pond World where walking and cycling trails start. The ancient city is surrounded by so-called Wet Meadows, which represent the original marshy landscape.
In the region of Třeboň you can meet a number of animal species, often directly by the human settlements. In the winter flocks of wild ducks nest by the Zlatá stoka Canal in Třeboň. They are so tame that you can feed them by hand.
Around the Třeboň Castle and the Castle Square you can see the peacocks that also enjoy a good bite. If you have a luck, you can see the otters or the kingfisher by the Zlatá stoka Canal.
The bounty of plant and animal species, as well as the existence of unique natural localities, resulted in listing the region of Třeboň in the international system of biosphere reserves of UNESCO in 1977.
Two years later, (1979) the Protected Landscape Area Třeboňsko was declared.
